“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
-C.S. Lewis
a while back i posted about vulnerability. being open, honest, real with others. allowing them to see who we truly are and not the facade we put up-that being the only way to grow deeper in a relationship. lately i've been realizing that its a lot easier said then done.
it's scary to put yourself out there. to be raw. to be open. we want others to think the best of us and how can we do that when we allow them to see the imperfections and brokeness of our lives. it's all about "protecting" our hearts, our pride, our self assurance. but where does that get you? i love C.S. lewis' quote about what happens to our hearts when we "protect it", thinking that our hearts are in a safer place when really we are just building walls to block others from ever seeing even a glimpse of them.
it's scary. there's a risk in being vulnerable. a risk that is a matter of the heart. taking that step off the edge. there's always a possibility of our hearts being broken, of our self confidence being shattered. but what about the other side to the arguement.
"It's a risk to love.
But what if it doesn't work out?
Ah, but what if it does. ”
